Maintaining Wellness Away from Home

Hi, I’m Jenna and I am an overpacker. I over analyze every situation, travel included, and bring it all - just in case. With that being said, there are very few instances I haven’t needed the extras I bring along, so there’s that.

One of my biggest struggles in traveling is that I live a very clean and healthy lifestyle at home. We are overly particular about the food we eat (for good reason), are cautious about chemicals used to clean and prefer to breathe mold-free air as much as possible. At home I have all the things in place to live in this healthy enviornment but when I travel it’s a whole thing to get me packed up and out the door.

A lot of people give me the eyes when I talk about what I pack and even how I live at home, but I will tell you, once your body is used to living this way you will never feel better. I’ve had friends that have secretly judged me convert to my way of living and later apologize because they feel that much better now.

At any rate, if you are curious about what to pack to keep a wellness routine on the go, or are looking for advice on how to do it - keep reading, I’ve got a lot to share.

Traveling can often disrupt our usual health and wellness routines, but with thoughtful packing and preparation, it's possible to maintain a clean, healthy lifestyle even when away from home. The key lies in selecting items that support your well-being without weighing down your luggage.

A cornerstone of healthy travel is staying hydrated. Packing a reusable water bottle is essential, not only for environmental reasons but also to ensure you always have access to water. When you get to where you are going purchase a case of water, ideally glass or boxed water.

I always pack on-the-go baby wipes to quickly “wash” or hands as needed.

I put all of my favorite skincare products in travel size bottles. They live in my travel toiletries bag so I don’t have to pack, unpack and repack all of that stuff every time we leave. Listen, at almost 40 there is a lot.

Pack whatever food won’t spoil in your luggage. If staying in a hotel, call ahead and ask for an extra (or two) mini fridges in your room. When you get to your destination pick up any food needed for the duration of the trip. Bonus points if you schedule your grocery pick up ahead of time. Remember to get disposable plates and utensils or ask the hotel to bring some to your room.

In a perfect world I would travel with my own sheets but I don’t have the space for that, unfortunately. Instead I pack my own pillow protective covers and cases. This way my face is not suffocated by the toxins of the bleach the hotel uses to clean their sheets.

Create a first aid kit for your family. Ours includes: thermometer, Benadryl, Clairton, cough medicine, cold crush, pain reliever, band-aids, anti-itch cream and melatonin.

Essential oil diffuser and oils. It could be a placebo effect, and that’s ok too, but I feel more calm in the room when I can smell the fresh scent of our essential oils. I use essential oils that are to detoxify the air. It can help create a healthier sleeping environment, especially useful if you're sensitive to new environments or concerned about air quality.

Lastly, I carry on our air purifier in a small suitcase. There is something so sketch to me about hotel rooms. I know those rooms are not mold-free so anything I can do to help the air quality even a little bit I will do. I will also open all of the windows, and keep them open, if the windows are operable.

See all that I bring with me here.
